The SOA Alumni held a public lecture on May 14th 2012 at the Auditorium. The theme for the lecture was “Positioning yourself in the local & global labour Market.” The guest speaker for the day was Susan Kiama, a HR Consultant at Three Green Apples Consulting. She was supported by a team of panelists namely: James Maitho of PWC Regional Human Capital Director East & West Africa and Faith Githaiga – a HR manager at NAS Airport Services. The Master of Ceremony was Anthony Ndegwa who is the Vice chair of the SOA Alumni committee.
Jane Kilonzo, who is the Chairlady of SOA Alumni committee took the floor to introduce the guest speaker and panelists. Lillian Munene, a Manager in the Fundraising department was then given the opportunity to launch the Dr. Jim McFie fund that is targeted at helping needy students. Dr. Jim Mcfie also addressed the attendees and explained more about the fund.
Susan Kiama then took the attendees through a presentation that focused on the important angles of positioning yourself in the labor market. She keenly pointed out the soft and hard skills that individuals needed to brand themselves well. “Africa has the best opportunities that are underutilized,” she said. She encouraged the attendees to tap into the many opportunities that are yet to be utilized. “With so many editing programs around now, it pains me to find grammatical errors on a Resume,” she lamented.
Anthony Ndegwa then conducted a question and answer section. The lecture was then concluded with a vote of thanks by Jane Kilonzo. The Next SOA Alumni event will be held in September.
