Sexual and gender based violence in Botswana is one of the most unfortunate occurrences in the country. It being a very patriarchal society, that attitude has played a major role in promoting incidences of gender based violence in Botswana.
According to The Gender Based Violence (GBV) Indicators Botswana study (2012), it provides shocking statistics on the prevalence of gender based violence in the country. Almost 70% of the women interviewed had experienced GBV at least once in their lifetime.
Only 1.2% of Botswana women reported cases of GBV to the police. About three in every five women (62%) experienced violence in an intimate relationship. About 30% of women experienced GBV, while 22.4% of men perpetrated GBV in the 12 months before the survey.
It is a very wretched situation, in that, as much as men and women of Botswana advocate for gender equality publicly, it has not sank and translated into their private lives.
