Top sports men and women of the year 2019 were feted at the Sports and Clubs Awards ceremony that took place at the University auditorium on February 7, 2020.

The men’s handball team, Tornados, which showed great prowess in 2019, walked away with a number of awards beginning with the Team of the Year award. Part of the team, Rashid Ingwela, Jackson Maloba, Allan Simiyu, and Maxwell Munene represented Kenya in Tunisia in January 2020 at the 24th All-African Games Tokyo Olympics qualifiers. Their coach, Peter Mwathi, who doubles as the Kenya national team’s coach, scooped the Coach of the Year award.

In the club awards, the Strathmore Marketing Club dominated the awards by clinching the Best Club report 2019, Best Club Event 2019, and Best Social media Presence 2019. Among their 2019 key highlights was hosting “The Crucible”, in partnership with Scan Group, KCB Bank, International School of Advertising (ISA) and Blaze by Safaricom. The Crucible is a Kenyan National Student Marketing Competition that provides university students with hands-on experience in marketing, from advertising, market research to brand management.

The Debate Club took the 2019 Club of the Year Award as well as the Best Ambassadors of the School Award. Two debate club members, Njuguna Macharia and Jabez Magomere, were placed second at the Pan-African University Debate Championships held between December 8th and 16th, 2019 in Kumasi, Ghana at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
