90 primary school head teachers and over 50 principals of secondary schools drawn from the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi attended the Art of leadership seminars given by Strathmore University's Institute of Humanities, Education and Development Studies (IHEDS).
The archdiocese Education Secretary Fr Lawrence Kamere who attended the seminar last year said he found it useful and challenging. "The teachers are very appreciative of the seminar," Fr Kamere said during the closing ceremony for the principal's seminar on Friday, 20th July 2007.
"My office is committed to offering quality education. To do this, we have to empower teachers in management and leadership. This seminar is part of that effort," he added.
The archdiocese sponsors 105 primary schools, 80 secondary schools and seven post-secondary school institutions of higher learning. Fr Kamere observed that other challenges facing the education sector in the archdiocese is getting heads of schools that are focused and ready to serve. "More Catholics should come up to take these responsibilities," he said.
The archdiocese covers Nairobi province, Kiambu and Thika districts. "Access to education in informal settlements and poor zones in the diocese is another challenge. Even when children from disadvantaged backgrounds come to school, they drop out of school because they don't even have food," he added.
