| Best foot forward: Strath FC's Byron Rogi intercepts a pass meant for McDonald Mariga |
After playing Nigeria's Eagles, Harambee Stars, the Kenya national soccer team needed to play a final warm up match before it left for an African Nation Cup qualifier match against Swaziland. Jacob 'Ghost' Mulee, the Stars' coach asked Mickey Weche, the Strath FC coach whether his team was available. Mulee was not disappointed.
Strath FC played Harambee Stars on Thursday, 31st May 2007 at Moi Sports Centre, Kasarani. Ghost started his full strength squad featuring house hold names like Arnold Origi in goal, George Waweru, Munandi Mulinge in defence, Titus Mulama, Robert Mambo in midfield and Dennis Oliech and McDonald Mariga in attack.
Strath lads started well but two quick goals by the Stars dis-oriented them somewhat. But they recovered quickly and held their own until the final whistle. Mulee was impressed and said he would be making arrangements for Strath FC to play national sides when they come to Kenya.
Weche, a former assistant coach and captain of the national side said such matches will go a long way in boosting the confidence of his lads. "The difference between us and the Stars today was experience and exposure. If we have more such matches, then we can get better results against such sides," Weche said after the game. |
