Strathmore University sports teams scooped a third of the awards at the inaugural sports tournament organized and hosted by the University on 29-30th September. Kenyatta University was second overall.
The tournament was dubbed Action is coming home. Ten institutions participated in the event. They were Africa Nazarene, CUEA, Egerton, KCA, KCITI, Kenya Polytechnic, KU, St Paul's, SU, and USIU.
SU ladies teams performed better than the men's teams. The ladies hockey team saw off their opponents in style and conceded one goal in the whole tournament on their way to lifting the champion's trophy.
The team playing with their top players gave no chance to their arch-rivals USIU in the one sided finals. Strathmore's Terry Mathenge and Nelson Shiahale won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) trophies in the women's and men's hockey games.
Fresh from an outstanding performance at the Parklands Invitational Karate championship that was held on 22nd September; Wendy Wamaitha won the ladies Kata competition in Karate while her teammates Mercy Ombuna and Emmanuel Maingi won the bronze medal in their respective Kumite competition.
SU's chess team trounced their opponents to win with a clean sheet. The team coached by Mr Paul Maloba also bagged the MVP trophy for the game.
The award went to Geoffrey Omondi of SOA.
Kenya Polytechnic's soccer team scooped the winner's trophy after beating a hard fighting SU B team in post match penalties. Leon Odhiambo of SU bagged the MVP.

Participants of the tournament lauded the University for the Superb organization of the tournament that ran on schedule to the end. The match officials were of national repute and handled all matches with due professionalism.
Presiding over the closing ceremony, Mr Paul Ochieng, SU's Dean of Students expressed his gratitude to the sports committee headed by Isaac Mwangi and consisting of all sports coaches for a job well done.
SU sports teams will be in action at the vast fields of KU this coming weekend (6th and 7th October) for the KU annual sports tournament. |
