Strathmore University (SU) basketball teams have been taking part in the Universities and Colleges basketball league (UCBL) 2005 since the month of January. The men's team, Strathmore Blades made it to the play offs after finishing third, out of 12 other universities and colleges. In the finals, the team lost to Kenya Christian Industrial Training Institute (KCITI) but went ahead to defeat Kenya Polytechnic and was crowned the second runners up of the UCBL 2005.
This is the second time SU has taken part in this league and due to their sterling performance the team won the team of the year award, while the SU basketball coach was awarded the coach of the year award.
In total the SU men's team brought home two trophies. The team beat Kenyatta University, Daystar University, Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Africa Nazarene, Kenya Polytechnic, Kenya College of Accountancy, and University of Nairobi to make it to the finals.
To add to the teams success, Strathmore Blades forwards, Keith Oruko and Godfrey Abuya were selected to the inaugural Kenya University team that is set to represent Kenya in the World University games this August in Turkey.
The SU ladies basketball team finished this year's UCBL in 4th position. This was an excellent performance as this was the first time the ladies team took part in the UCBL. Last season the ladies team was voted the most disciplined team in the Nairobi Basketball Association (NBA) league. More...
Great Rift Rugby Tournament
The SU rugby team travelled to Nakuru for the Great Rift 10-a-side rugby tournament. This was the team's first major assignment since the team won a bronze medal during the East Africa University Games held in December 2004.
The team was pooled alongside Kenya Harlequins, Kenyatta University, and Mwamba RFC. The team lost the first three games to more experienced sides like Mwamba who were the eventual winners of the tournament. It went all the way to the Bowl finals after beating Nakuru 2 and Nakuru Excels rugby teams in the Bowl semi-finals. SU team fought hard but lost to University of Nairobi's Mean Machine by 3 tries to 1 in the finals.
This was the first time the SU rugby team took part in a Kenya Rugby Football Union (KRFU) organized tournament. Due to their good performance in this event the team was invited to the national Under-21 tournament that will be held at KCB grounds. The team is preparing for the Kenya Universities Games to be held later in the year. Next year after the team is fully affiliated to the national body, it is poised to make a maiden appearance in the Eric Shirley cup.
SU Hockey Team in Vaisakhi Tournament
The hockey team had a busy schedule on 1st May as they started their Vaisakhi tournament fixtures at Parklands Sports Club. The team is pooled alongside such experienced sides as Karate Axiom, Wazalendo, and Nakuru Athletics. Their first game was cancelled due to heavy rains, while on their second game the SU team went on the rampage and thoroughly defeated Karate Axiom 6 – 2 to top their pool with a maximum 3 points and 6 goals. The tournament is one month long, where the winners in each pool proceed to the knock-out quarterfinals stage. The team will take on Wazalendo on 13th May 2005 at Simba Union Club.
