Fidelus Okello (in red) out sprints competition to win 400m
The 2008 Sports Day held on 22nd August will be remembered for a long time to come. Many dominances were cut and new records set.

The day begun with the long distance races. In the 5000m men, 15 athletes registered from all faculties and schools including the three time winner and defending champion Dr Paul Kioko. In the pack was Domenic Ikunga, a member of staff and a former National Youth Service (NYS) champion.

Mid-way the twelve lap race a team of three – Dickson Kantet, Kioko and Ikunga - broke away from the rest. Collins Asimba the 2007,  3000m winner followed them in fourth position. In the seventh, lap Kantet and Kioko broke away from Ikunga. Ikunga tried unsuccessfully to chase the duo.

In the tenth lap, Dickson Kantet sprinted away from Paul Kioko to win the race and break the latter’s dominance in the race. Domenic Ikunga finished third while Collins Asimba finished a distant fourth.

The 400m race was a Faculty of Commerce affair where Fidelus Okello saw off stiff competition from fellow teammates Kennedy Maru and Elias Kiptoo.

In the 100m dash, Meshack Senge, a staff member outsprinted the defending champion John Omoit to win the battle for the fastest man in the University in 12.50 seconds and set a new university record shattering the previous one of 12.75 seconds set during last year’s games by John Omoit. SOA dominated the track events and ended up winning the overall athletics trophy.

In women’s swimming, Elizabeth Wanjiru and Evelyn Ouma of the Faculty of Commerce shared the victories in all the races. Elizabeth won 100m freestyle, 50m backstroke and 50 breast stroke, while Evelyn beat her competition in the 50m freestyle and butterfly.

In Tennis, Obed Morara of Faculty of Information Technology and Mercy Mwende of SOA were triumphant in the men and women categories respectively.

With the bulk of the University basketball players coming from FIT, the FIT team had an easy time trouncing FOC,SOA and the Staff team to victory and thus lift the men’s basketball trophy.

SOA emerged the overall winners with 26 points followed closely by FOC with 24 points. FIT came in third with 15 points while the staff team was fourth with 9 points. John Omoit and Dennise Apondi were named the Sports man and Woman of the day.
