The inaugural six-a side tournament wound up on 12th August 2007 with a reward of a trip inclusive of a barbecue to Hell's Gate National Park for the winners. The runners up and the second runners up teams were treated to sumptuous dinners at Kengeles restaurant.
The tournament kicked off on a high note on 16th July 2007 with a total of 123 players registering to play in various teams. SU staff was represented by a “Wazees” team that went all the way to the quarter finals.
Each team comprised of a maximum of 8 players. The four week tournament witnessed a total of 62 goals scored in 38 matches of 20 minutes each. The eventual winners were the “All Blacks”, a team comprising mostly BCOM students.
“Nyundo” comprised of CPA evening students were runners up while the third spot was claimed by Franchise “Barcelona” boys who were a mixture of CPA, BBIT and BCOM students. The top scorer in the tournament was Francis Oluoch of Nyundo with eight goals, while John Omoit and Allan Onyango both of All Blacks followed closely with seven and five goals respectively.
The most disciplined player was Victor Ombuna of Franchise boys. The MVP (most valuable player) of the tournament was John Omoit of All Blacks while the best goalkeeping award went to Tonny Ochieng of Wazee. The medals and trophies to the winning teams were presented by the Director, Strathmore Business School Mr George Njenga and the Dean of Students, Mr Paul Ochieng'.
The tournament was run by the sports department to tap talent in the university and at the same time to improve competitiveness as the university gears towards the Annual Sports Day. The University Sports Officer said that he was impressed with the numbers who turned up to compete and the level of talent exhibited during the tournament.
The Sports Officer added that due to the enthusiasm created by the tournament there would be a 3 0n 3 basketball tournament and a 7 a side rugby tournament soon. The University soccer coach said he had used the tournament to recruit new talent in his team.
