Strathmore university rugby team "Leos" took part in the Great Rift Nakuru 10s tournament for the second time. This year's event comprised of 16 teams divided into four pools and each match lasted 14 minutes with an interval of seven minutes. Strathmore University, were in Pool B with hosts Nakuru RFC, former champions Nondescript and Nazarene University.
The first game was against hosts Nakuru and the Leo's stunned the crowd by showing a fluid passing game to emerge winners 7-5. Game two featured Leo's against former champions Nondescript where Leo's won again 7-0 in a close encounter. The third game of the day saw Leo's take on Nazarene University where Leo's trounced Nazarene 19-0. This put Leo's on top of Pool B and advanced to the Main Cup quarter finals without losing a game. Strathmore was voted the team of the day after a stunning performance.
Day two saw Leo's take on Moi University in the main cup quarter finals and again Leo's blew Moi University away recording a 24-0 win to proceed to the main cup semi-finals. In the semis Leo's were drawn to face defending champions Mwamba RFC. The game was played in a waterlogged field under a heavy down pour that saw Mwamba beat Leo's 17-0.
The youthful Strathmore University team displayed a game full of creativity that impressed the selectors. The team earned an invitation to the under 21 circuit that will start on May 6th 2006 at KCB grounds in Ruaraka.
