Strathmore university rugby team made their debut appearance in the Eric Shirley Shield on April 22, 2006 at Nairobi School against Daystar University. The team who unveiled their new name “Leos” at the beginning of the season displayed a devastating form by whitewashing rivals Daystar University 64–5.

The "Leos" used this match as a preparation for the Great Rift 10s that were to be held in Nakuru, the following weekend. The coach Mitch Ocholla was quoted as saying the match was very important as it gave him a chance to try out all his players and gauge them well before the Nakuru tournament.
