Heads of private universities in Kenya meeting under the auspices of Kenya Association of Private Universities (KAPU) held a strategy workshop in Naivasha from 29th June to 1st July 2007. The workshop was facilitated by George Njenga, Director, Strathmore Business School and Martin Wanjohi, ICT Director, Strathmore University.
KAPU's vision is to become an effective voice for advancing the goals of private universities in the country. To do this, KAPU hopes to provide a forum for collaboration and coordination of private institutions of higher education in Kenya that will impact national and regional policies and assure quality of education. The core values of KAPU are excellence, integrity and openness.
At the workshop, the Director of the country's Vision 2030, Dr Wahome Gakuru outlined the vision as it relates to the education sector.
KAPU is currently going through the process of registration although some universities have been working together informally. For example, Strathmore and United States International University (USIU) have had a joint initiative for teaching courses in Spanish sponsored by the Spanish Embassy.
The workshop discussed the strategy, areas of collaboration, organization, mechanisms and funding for KAPU. Officials of KAPU at the moment are Prof. Freida Brown, Vice-Chancellor of USIU is the Chair; Prof Mutuma Mugambi, Vice-Chancellor of Kenya Methodist University (KEMU) is Vice-Chair; Dr Timothy Wachira, Principal St. Paul's Theological College, is Secretary; and Prof Douglas Carew is the Treasurer.
