Dr Bitange Ndemo, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Communication will open Strathmore's Mobile Boot Camp, a two-day mobile phone technologies crash course. The event will be held on 28th and 29th November at the University.
Camp participants will gain an insight on mobile computing technologies as well as acquire some practical skills in the use of current platforms, frameworks and tools used for the development of mobile applications. They will learn: wireless networking, server-side mobile application(s), mobile computing, standardisation, wireless messaging, mobile OS (operating systems) and server environment.
The camp will foster development of new applications for mobile phone users within the Kenyan context, create awareness on current mobile technology developments, comprehensively discuss mobile technological tools available for application developers, develop mobile applications skills among participants, and award prizes to the team that develops the best application(s), and award seed funds to the best teams interested in turning their idea into a commercial venture.
The target groups for the event are local developers and students from all public and private universities countrywide. About 100 energized participants are expected at the event.
The aim of the camp is to enhance participants' capacity to develop meaningful solutions, and enable them to think: easily, efficiently, alternatively, fast and smart. The camp will have both theoretical and practical sessions.
The camp will impart skills and resources to participants, promote innovation driven solutions, develop a mobile phone programming curriculum, and promote research within the academic community.
Mobile usage has grown tremendous in Africa and has had immense impact on the continent because of its varied uses. These uses include sending and receiving money, messages, and air time.
Charges for this two-day event are:
Students: 500 /= (inclusive of lunch for the 2 days)
Non-students: 700/= (inclusive of lunch for the 2 days)
