  SU now a Microsoft IT Academy

In recognition of its commitment to the success of its students through excellence in IT education, Strathmore University has been named a member of the Microsoft IT academy program. "The program will be launched at the university later this month, says Mr John Matogo, the Program's Administrator.

Under the program, SU students can access and install Microsoft software at no charge. A software festival is on where students can have Microsoft software installed on their laptops and PCs for free. Those interested can contact Mr Matogo for more details.

Students will also enjoy discounted rates to sit Microsoft Certification exams. They will also have access to Microsoft learning material.

Other benefits of the program include access to Microsoft's extensive e-learning portfolio that includes games, videos, and interactive text to help students master skills and provide instructors with ongoing professional development opportunities. Microsoft has so far sponsored four University instructors in training for Visual C#.Net.

Another benefit is Microsoft's Digital Literacy curriculum which provides essential computing skills for learners new to computing. Microsoft IT Academy members also receive special pricing for Microsoft Official Curriculum (MOC) which includes courseware, seminars, workshops, and clinics.

Additionally, academic institutions like SU get Microsoft Official Academic Courses (MOAC) that provide the perfect curriculum for semester- and quarter- based courses under the program. Supplements include an instructor resource center, teaching notes, virtual labs, assessments, and sample syllabi. Under the program, the memory of 20 SU computers will be upgraded and the University will in addition be given a projector.

IT has been identified has great enabler of economic development. "The development of a software economy and more generally an IT economy are very important for the economic development of Kenya since IT increases economic productivity. The MS –IT Academy will go a long way in fulfilling this promise," Mr Matogo says.
