Alumnus develops IT system for medical centres
Muriithi
Francis Muriithi
For his final year project, Francis Muriithi, set out to develop a clinic management system for Ben-Ammi Medical Centre. The system is now attracting the attention of other medical centre managers.

To come up with the system, Francis used Structured Systems Analysis and Design Methodology (SSADM) to investigate the business environment. He interviewed the clinic administrator and the doctors of the centre. Data from the interviews was supplemented with a thorough review and analysis of the centre’s documents.

He used Logical Data Modeling, Data Flow Modeling and Entity/Event Modeling were the techniques to analyse the data and smart client architecture to design the system. Smart client architecture means the system processes data both at the serve and the workstation(s).

The system was developed using Microsoft Visual Basic.NET 2003 programming framework which supports the smart client architecture. The system uses MS SQL Server 2000.

Tests were done on the areas of functionality, performance, integration and environment. After a series of tests, the project sponsor agreed to fully adopt the system if it included a module for pharmacy that will be able to integrate with the clinic’s data; and if an inventory management system to monitor the sale of medicines and track their re-order levels was developed.

After the changes were incorporated, three other clinics witnessed the product demo and indicated interest in buying the software. Francis is, now working with KPMG Kenya as a Senior Advisor. He has risen two levels in a period of one year at the firm.

Francis graduated with first class honours from Strathmore University. He is a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), and Certified Information Security Manager (CISM). His project was supervised by Dr Freddie Acosta, a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Information Technology. Francis will give a two-hour lecture to BBIT students on computer security on Monday, 25th February.
