Mr Fanon Ananda, a lecturer in the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) and Mr John Kiptum of Citibank (and a Strathmore alumnus)  made a presentation titled "Security issues of M-Banking" at the Information security and cyber forensics conference held  at the Hilton Hotel, Nairobi from 29th to 31st October.

The conference was organized by South Africa's Academic Medical Centre (AMC). It drew participants from a number of countries in Africa.

Mr Ananda's presentation approached the topic from the M-Pesa point of view.  M-pesa is the most dominant form of virtual banking in Kenya. Participants  were quite fascinated because a majority of them had not encountered the service before.

The presentation approached the security issue from two main perspectives: the application and the network infrastructure. The presentation exposed possible security loopholes from an IT perspective. It also explored M-Pesa's regulation issues. It was agreed that the Central Bank of Kenya  needs to step up and fill the regulation void.
