| Leos captain Wycliffe Kibet receives the trophy from Mr Cardovillis |
Strathmore University rugby team "Leos" clinched a double to end the 15s season in style by beating KCB II 32 – 7 in the Mwamba cup finals played at RFUEA grounds on Saturday, 1st September. Leos is the first team in history to win Mwamba and Eric Shirley Shield (ESS) competitions in the same season.
The ESS champions approached the game positively and took the lead through a penalty conversion by Joshua "Rogo" Gathumbi in the 7th minute. He later followed with another conversion five minutes later to give Leos a 6-0 lead.
Leos continued to show resilience to a hard fighting and experienced KCB by patiently working on their mauls that gave them the first try through David Kioko to lead 13–0 at the break. The introduction of Teddy Salano and Brian Okwomi in the second half saw a change of pace and execution of hard tackles in the game.
KCB caved in to the pressure and David Kioko, Ian Mwangi, and Captain Wycliffe Kibet made tries. KCB got a late consolation in the game after pouncing on a lose ball.
Leos did not disappoint their student comrades who turned out in large numbers and cheered them for the entire game. The chest thumping team also got support from senior members of the staff with Prof David Sperling, Dr Charles Sotz and Mr Kevin O'Byrne in attendance.
An elated Prof Sperling amid the cheering songs and dance by the students commented: "this is sensational. We have not witnessed such huge numbers of SU students coming to support and cheer our teams like this before. It is very good for the teams and for the other students too".
Leos beat Harlequins in the quarter finals before seeing off Kenyatta University's Blak Blad 55 – 5 in the semis. The team is now preparing to start their campaign in the national 7s circuit that will start on 22nd September 2007 in Nakuru.
