Strathmore Leos started Day-1 of the Driftwoods competition by beating hosts Mombasa Sports Club 19–7 in the opening match. In the second game of the day, Leos beat Mombasa Polytechnic 28–0, and secured a place in the quarter finals. In the last preliminary match, Leos were seeded in the tough pool A and lost 21-17 to Mwamba.
Leos played Impala RFC, the current Kenya Cup runners up, in the quarter finals in Day-2 of the tournament. The match was tied 5-5 at the end of regular time. The game proceeded to extra time on sudden death rule which saw Strathmore Leos beat Impala 10 – 5 and secure a place in the semis against Nondies.
Leos displayed brilliant defence and executed their game plan with patience which saw them beat Nondies 14–0 to qualify for the finals for the first time ever. In the finals, Strathmore played against a star studded Mwamba RFC, the defending champions of the national 7s circuit. Mwamba have six players in the 7s national team.
Leos finished second overall and was the top university side. Commenting on the achievement, Kenya Rugby Football Union (KRFU) General Manager said that Leos had come of age. He added that this was the youngest side to reach a national circuit final. |
