  Talking to one Another

One of the sorry sights of our capital city, Nairobi, is the huge numbers of unemployed youth in the estates and the slum villages sitting idle or walking up and down waiting for handouts.

Realising that laments are sterile and what is called for are solutions, the University, through Community Outreach Programme (COP), entered an agreement with the Kenya Youth Business Trust (KYBT), to provide business counsellors from among our students and alumni to work as volunteers assisting unemployed but promising and committed youth in slums to draw up a business plan and follow through with it. Our first group of 5 students has just begun to work with KYBT.

Unemployed youth also need to know they have a role to play in society. COP is encouraging many of the youngsters to turn to sport, particularly soccer. This is in the belief that sport is a good discipline; as a consequence, many budding sportsmen feel the need to apply discipline to other areas of their lives.

COP has also been giving talks on life-related issues such as substance abuse; AIDS awareness; health, sports and fitness; relationships and careers and further training to groups of youth in Mukuru slum and the estates close by. The numbers to get to are colossal; but we are not deterred.
