SU triumph at national Karate championship

KarateStrathmore University's Karate team took part in the first Japan Karate Association of Kenya (JKA-K) Shoto cup championship held at Utalii College on Saturday, 27th October 2007. More than seven teams and 80 individuals from various parts of the country participated in the tournament making it the biggest team championship in the country.

SU managed to scoop two top awards in both Kata and Kumite categories to come second position overall in both men and ladies categories. The youthful team put up a spirited performance against major national clubs like Kenya Police, Kenya Prisons, and Parklands Sports Club among others.

Two teams represented SU at the tourney - Kata novices' men category team of Irvin Safari, John Mwangi and Roy Kamenju and Kata seniors' men category represented by Bernard Shibwabo, Lemmy Munene and Stephen Rigii. Though young and few, the team showed a lot of discipline and class and gave other teams a run for their money.

SU coach senior sensei George Otieno was happy with the performance. He said the team was making good progress and maturing in a game where experience matters.
