SU lecturer Ms Lucy Gikonyo, and SU's Director of Advancement, Mr Luis Borrallo addressed some 2,000 executives and entrepreneurs gathered at IESE Business School's new campus in Barcelona to celebrate the beginning of IESE's 50th anniversary celebrations.
The session given by SU staff on "Speeding up Africa's Development" was meant to sensitise European business leaders on Corporate Social Responsibility and how they can help African institutions to play a leading role in Africa´s development. Ms Gikonyo discussed in some detail SU's plans to set up a Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management in SU.
Mr Borrallo gave a bigger picture of other projects started by Strathmore Trustees and other similar institutions, and he stressed the importance of fostering continued development in Kenya. The session heard that SU, through its programmes, its graduates and staff, is having a positive impact on Africa's sustainable growth. Mr Joaquin Almunia, Commissioner for Economic Affairs in the European Union, gave a paper at the same conference on Growth and Sustainability in Europe. The closing presentation was delivered by 2006 Nobel laureate Edmund S. Phelps of Columbia University, USA.
