The 7th annual Strathmore University Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) conference was held on Saturday, 9th September 2006 at the University Auditorium beginning at 9am. The theme of the conference was Emerging Technologies and the Future of ICT Sector in Kenya. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof John Odhiambo, welcomed the chief speaker, Dr Bitange Ndemo, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Communications who presented a paper on, Improving access to technology for economic development.
The conference focused on connectivity, ICTs application in education, media, government service provision, and banking in Kenya, and ICTs and social development. It also touched on emerging trends in software development, mobile telephony and web technologies.
Kai Wulff, Managing Director, Kenya Data Networks presented a paper on Digital Dream: Present and future in Kenya.Chris Pasha, Head of Marketing, Commercial Bank of Africa presented a paper on E-banking in Kenya: practical lessons to be drawn. Clement Nyandiere, Dean, Faculty of Information Technology, Strathmore University presented a paper on The Role of Information Systems in the Management of Higher Education Institutions and Meoli Kashorda, a professor of ICTs presented on Emerging Trends in ICT Education and Shahab Meshki, Regional Manager, Africa & Middle East, CISCO Systems on Spreading the ICT gospel Through ICT Academy Programmes. |

Chaacha Mwita, Group Managing Editor, Standard Group presented a paper on ICT Trends and their Role in Shaping the Media Industry in Kenya. Joseph Maruti from NETCorps presented on ICT Access for the Disadvantaged Communities and Andrew Limo from Directorate of e-Government presented a status report on e-Governance, Kenya on Government of Kenya Services Online
A researcher with GTZ and a PhD candidate at University of Hamburg, Salesio Mbogo Kiura talked about Developments in Participatory Methods for Software Development while Alex Fares, the Operations Director at Celtel Kenya talked about Emerging Cellular Technologies and the Future. Peter Okech, ICTs lecturer at Strathmore University talked about Semantic web technologies: Foundation for Future Enterprise Systems.
The conference aims to promote linkages between academia and industry and also provides a platform for researchers to make public their findings. Over 500 participants attended with majority of them being students from various universities and colleges. 117 attendees came from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, 219 were Strathmore students while University of Nairobi, Daystar, Catholic University had 16, 17, and 24 students in attendance respectively. 32 attendees came from middle-level colleges. There were 31 professionals and 50 guests (speakers and sponsors).
