The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Communication, Dr Bitange Ndemo has challenged universities in Kenya to set up business incubators to help their graduates enter into self-employment. Dr Ndemo was speaking at the closing of Strathmore's 9th ICT conference on Saturday, 6th September at the University's auditorium.
"The neighbourhoods of Ivy League universities in USA are made up of businesses incubators. In Kenya, all you find in the neighbourhoods of universities are halls of residence", the PS said.
Strathmore University is in the process of building a business centre with business incubation facilities. The works on the building which will be situated where the soccer pitch currently is will begin in mid-October. The centre is part of the University's Phase III project. The project will include a new and larger Business School complex, a new tuition block, and sports facilities.
The ICT conference has since year 2000 offered a unique opportunity for participants to engage in discussions centered on a particular theme selected by both academics and industry practitioners. Last year, it was expanded to a two-day conference. The theme of this year's conference is ICT's Role towards a Knowledge Economy.
