First SU Graduates Shine at Work

About 40% of Strathmore University's first degree graduates have found employment in various sectors of the economy.

A quick survey indicates that most of these have joined the service industry, mainly consultancy and banking, while a number are in manufacturing, merchandising and transport.

Rose Chelagat, Kinga Agnes Wairimu and Mwaura Christine Ng'endo are now working with consultancy firm Deloitte & Touche, Christine Mumbua is with Barclays Bank of Kenya while John K'Otieno is now with Akamba Bus Service.

According Martin Kisuu, a partner at Deloitte, the SU graduates, having been picked after a series of interviews from a large pool of graduates from various institutions in the region, have "impressed" the firm.

"All the four SU candidates excelled in the aptitude test," he said. "The panel of managers also ranked them top of other candidates. The four pre-qualified candidates from SU took the first four positions. Unfortunately, one of them could not take up his position immediately. They exhibited an exceptional degree of brilliance, self-confidence, and the willingness to excel," Mr Kisuu added.

After reporting to Deloitte, they underwent a three week internal course together with trainees from Uganda and Tanzania. Some sessions were attended by trainees who had joined Deloitte earlier. The course was conducted by experts from Kenya and South Africa.

"One of our large clients attended one of the sessions where the trainees were required to make a presentation and field questions from the client. In all these sessions, all the facilitators and the client were absolutely impressed by your graduates. They even did much better than some of the older trainees," Mr Kisuu concluded.

Elizabeth Ngaru of SU's Placement Office says the University is working hard to ensure that all its graduates get jobs by August this year.
