The humanitarian crisis occasioned by the post-elections violence has made the Corporate Outreach Program Club (COP Club) a very busy. On Saturday, 17th February 2007, the Club visited internally displaced people IDPs sheltered at Thika Municipal Stadium.
The camp is run by the Red Cross. The club donated food, clothing and toiletries. The Club also met the chairman of national development, Kenya Red Cross, Mr Patrick Mungai who engaged the club in a long talk and revealing talk. He was in the company of Michael Macharia, chief, Thika Municipality location.
Mr Mungai said that although few people were in the camp, Red Cross was supporting people who had come from other parts of the country and were living with relatives in Thika and the surrounding areas. The Red Cross staff said there were people who had been moved to their ancestral land but had come back to the camp.
But things are slowly returning to normalcy. "Some of the people at the camp go to work and come back to the camp," Mr Macharia said.
On Saturday, 9th February, the Club visited IDPs sheltered at Tigoni Police Station in Limuru. There too, the Club donated food, clothing and toiletries. It also helped in preparing lunch for the IDPs, cleaning the camp and erecting tents. Later on the same day, the club met and played with internally displaced youth living at Kirathimo camp in Limuru.
COP activities are open to all students and staff.
