Alumni online database hits 300

Strathmore Alumni Liaison Office (SALO) online database got its 300th subscriber on Monday, 17th December. Tom Mboya Aomo, an Assistant Controller in the Finance Department, Carrier Corporation (http://www.corp.carrier.com) was the 300th subscriber. Tom pursued CPA in Strathmore until 1997 when he left to pursue further studies in USA. Read more...

Prof David Sperling and Dr James McFie were awarded the Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear (E.B.S) and the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (M.B.S) respectively by President Kibaki on 12th December 2007. Strathmore University Karate Team participated in a joint training and grading session on Saturday, 1st December 2007 at Parkland Sports Club organized by the Japan Karate Association – Kenya (JKA-K).  Three SU Karatekas, Stephen Rigii, Bernard Shibwabo and John Mwangi, participated in the grading exercise presided over by JKA-K officials. In a quest to strengthen the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) teaching staff, Dr Freddie Acosta, the newly appointed Academic and Research Director of FIT visited Philippines, his home country to look for young and talented lecturers last month.To join FIT in January 2008 is Mr Melvin Ballera, a lecturer from the Philippines who is in his final year of his PhD in Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence). Mr Ballera holds as a BSc in Computer Engineering and a MSc in Computer Science. He is also a Microsoft Certified Professional and a CISCO Instructor. Read more...

SU ladies the new Nairobi Basketball Champs

Strathmore University basketball team better known as "Swords" are the newly crowned Nairobi Basketball Association (NBA) champions. The feat means that they have been promoted to the national premier league. Consulting firm offering scholarships to SU students

Hockey team visits Children's Home

As an act of gratitude, the men's hockey team, the Gladiators visited Mama Ngina Children's Home in Nairobi's South C. The team has had a very successful year. It is the reigning East Africa hockey club champion and nine of its members are in the national hockey team. The team gave the home Christmas gifts and spent some time with the children. Communication key to healthy families

Daughters have a closer relationship with their fathers, so how should parents manage this relationship? Prof Meoli Kashorda says mothers should encourage this relationship so that fathers can communicate family values to the daughters. Speaking at a parent's seminar at the University, Prof Kashorda said if mothers are uncomfortable with the closeness between daughter and father, it means the relationship between spouses is poor. Alumnus ordained Deacon

Charles Wanyoike Mundia was ordained deacon on 24th November in Rome by the prelate of Opus Dei, Bishop Javier Eschevarria. Deacon Charles was admitted to pursue CPA in Strathmore's School of Accountancy (SOA) in January 1997. He joined University of Nairobi in 1998 to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce degree. At the same time, he continued his CPA studies. He graduated from SU in 2002. Read more...

74% of Kenyan companies don't have family supportive cultures

A study conducted by Strathmore Business School's (SBS) Center for Research on Work and Family reveals that of 40 companies surveyed, 8% have no family policies, 28% have family policies which have never been implemented, 38% have policies which were seldom used while only 26% have family responsive cultures. SU sweeps Daystar Sports Tournament

Strathmore University teams took part in the Daystar University annual sports tournament that was held on 17th and 18th November 2007 and scooped all the top trophies in the sports they participated in. In men's basketball, SU "Blades" started off well by beating Kenya Methodist University 17-16 before dismissing hosts Daystar 26-24. They later beat Mombombo 16-15 to qualify for the semifinals. Marcelo Galvao, a top level coach from Brazil held a two-day soccer clinic at Strathmore University. The clinic held on 12th and 13th November was followed by a two-day recruitment drive at the University grounds that was attended by coaches from various teams and institutions as well as students. SU has been invited by the Kuali Foundation to give a presentation on its experiences in implementing the Kuali Finance System (KFS) at a conference in Phoenix, Arizona. SU was the first university to implement the new version of KFS worldwide. The presentation will be done by SU's ICT Director, Mr Martin Wanjohi, and SU's Finance Accountant, Mr Vincent Ndoloka. Strathmore University goes wireless… and laptops spring up in every corner of the campus

Strathmore University has deployed a wireless network in its Madaraka campus. While the computer labs with nearly 300 desktop machines remain in the wired network, this new initiative targets the growing base of students who would like to access information and learning material from their classrooms, lecture halls, the cafeteria, court yards and the library.
