Strathmore University is just beginning and it will take time and effort to build a reputation in the global scene, says Dr James McFie, a senior lecturer at the University. "The challenge we have is to be the best in the world," Dr McFie told the first group of ACCA students to take the Computer-Based Examination (CBE) for the Accountant in Business.
This is the first time that ACCA students were sitting for the new CBE syllabus which was introduced this year. The new 'Accountant in Business' course is designed to introduce the student to the structure and purpose of business and to the fact that the function of accountancy is central to all business operations.
"The new paper is much more detailed than the previous Managing People paper. The students were exceptional. They worked hard and they all passed," said Miss Irene Ngunjiri, the paper's lecturer.
Dr McFie noted that to be the best in the world, students have to be ready to learn. "We all have to realize we are zero and be constantly ready to learn. Students need to have initiative in order to excel. And this calls for humility. Also remember that the need for self improvement will never end," he said.
Speaking on behalf of the students, Handerson Mwandembo said students are an integral part of the university and urged his colleagues to take up the challenge and learn to take initiative so as to ensure Strathmore becomes a centre of excellence.
Cautioning the successful candidates against the temptation of resting on their laurels and urging them to foster a youthful, sporting spirit, Mwandemo said "the green ripens, but the ripe rots". |
