Safaricom Academy:

Master of Science in Mobile Telecommunication and Innovation (MSc. MTI)

2015/16 Intake

The Master of Science Degree in Mobile Telecommunications and Innovation programme is designed to support innovation and entrepreneurship in the Telecommunication sector as in important pillar of sustainable economic development. Mobile cellular technologies have enabled the poorest regions/countries to extend communication to the rural poor to access cheaper services in support of agricultural services, micro-financial services and mobile money transfers etc. As the demand for these services and applications increases, the need to develop innovative solutions also increases. This programme focuses on the entrepreneurial spirit of students and the youth to meet this growing demand.

Growth in mobile phone technology in Africa has been phenomenal and especially in Kenya where money-transfer applications have transformed the economy and life-style of Kenyans. With the arrival of three fibre-optic cables to the country in the last two years, connectivity costs have dropped and will still drop further in the near future. Mobile operators have invested heavily in connectivity becoming investors in the fibre-optic cables and deploying various technological solutions throughout the country including 3G; it is already possible to have Internet access even in remote areas.

On the other hand, mobile device manufacturers have been releasing affordable Internet-enabled phones for under KShs. 3,000 and, recently, smartphones running on the Android platform for about KShs. 8,000. With the cost of Internet access and the price of Internet-enabled mobile devices plummeting, access to the Internet is available at affordable prices for large segments of the population. The country has a current mobile subscriber base of 20m while Internet penetration is estimated at only 4m. This situation presents a wealth of opportunities to local innovators that would be able to tap this potentially huge market by providing relevant content, services and applications both to local industries and communities potentially reaching the bottom of the pyramid.

This programme is an applied computer science skill-based master’s course that addresses the needs of students and entrepreneurs from various related backgrounds, e.g. Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, etc., who wish to establish businesses or build careers in the field of telecommunication. In collaboration with the Safaricom Academy, students in the programme will gain practical industry experience on applications’ development and best industry practices.  The programme also offers Leadership and Management skills to prepare students to take up leadership roles in business, academia and the IT Industry. The programme further opens the way for candidates who may wish to develop further their knowledge in IT through research with the intention of undertaking a PhD programme.

Rationale for the MSc.MTI Programme

In the last few years, the telecommunication and mobile industry has experienced a very rapid growth, mobile operators have exponentially expanded their services to many citizens and we have experienced a drastic reduction of mobile data services costs as well as a migration to newer and more powerful technologies such as 3G and 4G.

Simultaneously, Internet-enabled devices and smartphones are dropping in price at a quick pace, making them affordable to a large part of the population. At the same time, there is an acute lack of applications which are relevant to the local market thus providing a wealth of opportunities for young innovators and developers of mobile content. As a result, there is a growing number of young undergraduates with an interest in tapping the potential of mobile applications, and therefore, an emergent demand for courses at the master level in this field.

Aligned with the focus of Strathmore in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, the University wishes to address this need for academic development and train highly competent IT professionals at Masters’ and doctoral levels who are experts and/or researchers in their respective areas of specialisation.
