HeaLth Experts Meeting Held by SGC
An Experts Meeting was convened at the Strathmore University on Thursday, December 10th to discuss recommendations made during a 2008 Health Workshop which tackled ways to mitigate risks in the Supply chain for health commodities in the Kenya. The Vice-Chancellor of Strathmore University, Dr. John Odhiambo, opened the session and stated that the Strathmore Governance Centre (SGC) is not interested in drawing up indices of corrupt institutions in the country but in carrying out research that will be used by policy makers in the country during the decision making process. During the session, the experts drew up major critical research themes on which Strathmore Governance Centre (SGC) researchers will be working on soon in order to assist in improving the environment surrounding the supply chain of health commodities. The Experts agreed on the fact that a survey and review of the legal and policy framework governing the health sector is needed if possibilities of a better health sector are to be achieved. Experts from Health sector who made up the panel included Dr. John Munyu, acting Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KEMSA), Dr. D.S.K Ngugi, chairman of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK), Charles Kimani of MEDS, Alice Micheni of USAID, Cavin Opiyo of GTZ, Dr. Othieno Nyanjom of KIPPRA and Richard Pendame from DFID. Dr. Eric Aligula of the Kenya Institute for Public Policy and Research Analysis (KIPPRA) moderated the session. Strathmore University was represented by Dr. Antoinette Kankindi, Director of SGC, Prof. David Sperling, Research Professor at Strathmore University and Dr. Tom Odhiambo, a researcher at the Governance centre. |
