Kenya’s Vice-President launches Strathmore Prisons Project

March 26, 2004

A prison may seem an unlikely venue for a university educational project, but that is exactly what began on the March 26, 2004 when the Vice-President and Minister of Home Affairs, Moody Awori, officially launched the Strathmore University Prisons Project at Naivasha Prison.

Strathmore University would like to turn Kenyan prisons, at least for some inmates, into a school for life. Through the Distance Learning Centre of the School of Accountancy we hope to provide quality education to more than 200 inmates who have expressed interest in further education and who have the necessary qualifications to do our courses. To do this, Strathmore University reached an agreement with the Prisons Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs to provide professional courses in Accountancy and Management for interested inmates who meet the requirements of the Kenya Accountants and Secretaries National Examination Board. So far, 48 students have enrolled. Prison wardens (both men and women) are also eligible to do the same course of study together with the prisoners. Eventually, 20% of male Prison Wardens and 80% of female Prison Wardens will benefit from the project. By the end of the year we expect to have enrolled a total of at least one hundred students.

The project is being funded jointly by the “Harambee 2002” Fund and Strathmore University. “Harambee 2002”, a fund for educational projects in sub-Saharan Africa, is funding 90% of the project and Strathmore University the other 10%. The “Harambee 2002” Fund was established on 6th October 2002 at the canonization of St Josemaría Escrivá in Rome from contributions made by pilgrims and well-wishers. The Fund is currently supporting 18 different projects in 13 sub-Saharan countries.
