COP visits Spurgeon's Academy in Kibera The Community Outreach Program (COP) Club on Saturday, 14th November visited Spurgeon's Academy in Kibera, a school for orphans run by volunteer guardians from the slum.
The Academy is supported by Spurgeon's, is one of the UK's largest Christian charities working with children, young people and families.
Wallace Mokembo, a COP member wrote the poem below after the visit
A day like no other
A day like no other, spirit of service burns in the hearts of many Its 9.30a.m. C.O.P members set off for the big task at hand Mission to reach out to our young brothers and sisters in Kibera Laughter and warmth fills the bus as the will rises beyond horizons Will of readiness to carry the day's activities to brighten the kid's faces
Yes from far I can't see the gate, for its wide open Maybe a sign to show, the visitors were expected From the windows they stare, while others stop playing Stop playing to rush and meet their big brothers and sisters Their faces changes, the excitement cant be hidden
Mixed never to be separated, as if the games had be planned for Childhood games prevail, played by both the old and the young Motivation takes place, young ones also become stars in the eyes of the old At times the shock tend to be absorbed softly with amusement Hearts get filled with love and passion, true we always need each other
Giving the world the best is maybe one of the philosophies of C.O.P One thing which can't be achieved only by playing, time to share To share from both sides of the coin, both young and the old Childhood experiences are shared, good code of conduct lights the classes Class work problems are silenced, solutions taking room, what a joy
The minds need some rest, yes yes in the minds of the children Brothers and sisters time again to play together, yes high time to do it Games start again, off three members we set off with the teacher in charge Down the narrow paths of Kibera to visit the homes from which the children come from To summarise our hearts filled with tears of sorrow, all they need is encouragement
It a day well spent, a day everyone wishes it could remain young forever Leaving each other a hard task, thirty more minutes maybe could help Ooh no mixed feeling of happiness and sadness are evident in their eyes as we leave Sweet brothers and sisters bye, we will come back some day, don't forget all we told you I salute you all C.O.P members, well done, off back to school |
