When SUITSA taught IT skills at Mama Ngina Children’s Home
Towards the end of last semester, Strathmore University IT Students’ Association identified a knowledge gap

at the Mama Ngina Children’s Home in South C. The Home was richly endowed with computers. However, there were no computer tutors available to teach the children basic skills required to use the computers.

SUITSA decided to fill in the gap by providing free tutorials on computer fundamentals every Saturday. The project was adopted as part of the club’s corporate social responsibility programme during the April-June holiday.

The project was spearheaded by Waliaula Selina, a BBIT4 student and a member of SUITSA. SUITSA members facilitated the lessons which officially kicked off on 17th April.

The club agreed on the lessons to teach each Saturday. The lessons covered basic computer skills like Introduction to Basic Hardware, Introduction to Windows, Typing in Notepad, basic formatting in WordPad, alongside other skills in Microsoft Office PowerPoint and Microsoft Office Excel.

Both the children and volunteer teachers expressed a great feeling of fulfillment. A delighted Donn Okinyi (one of the teachers) could not hide his excitement. “It was my first time to work with kids in a teacher-student relationship. The management at the Home was so welcoming and the children were fast learners. To me, it was a life changing experience!”

The rest of the teachers included: Sanda Katembo, Sylvia Sigei, James Kadu, Elisha Orwa, Raymond Onyango, Adil Fernandez, Grace Aluoch, Ronald Wanyama Wekesa, Elvira Napwora Lukelesia, Catherine Ndururi Mugure, Feksi Ismene, and Atlanta Kufwafwa.

The management team at the Home could not hide its gratitude either. Administrator Mary Wawira, the Children’s Officer at the Home said that the club had made a great difference in the lives of the children involved, not only in terms of IT skills but also in mentoring them.

The project was designed to have a chain effect where those children who were taught were given the power to teach others with minimal supervision..
SUITSA is also seeking to get faster and more advanced computers for the Home and has submitted proposals to various banks and companies to make donations of new computers to the Home.
