Mukuru Community Centre
Working at kwetu Home of Peace and interacting with the boys was the greatest experience I ever had as it helped me understand the difficulties faced by different people in our society.
I also learned that I can give back to society not only materially, but also by giving a little love and support to the less fortunate and thus convert their lives. As the boys have different characteristics, I got to know how to deal with them individually and so co-relate with other people. |

At Mama Ngina Children's Home
- I learned time management as I had to balance between volunteer service and still attend Certified Public Account(CPA) evening classes.
- Social responsibility was instilled into me, that we have an important role to play in taking care of the less fortunate.
- I had an opportunity to interact and understand the older children and they inspired me as they still have a positive attitude towards life.
- Above all, I had the chance to take care of the babies I love so much and it is one of the greatest benefits that will make me continue with volunteer work in my spare time.
At Shangilia Mtoto wa Africa (Swahili for Celebrate the African Child)
- I learned how to teach and handle young and needy people.
- I learned how to interact with other members of staff and cope with them, though they were very friendly and supportive.
- I was able to interact with different donors and shared ideas on how they manage the organizations/school in their countries.
- I managed to visit various parts of the country.
Imani Children's Home
Sometimes I was sent to the babies department. There I used to wash the small babies, feed them, wash their clothing and mop their bedrooms. I was sometimes sent to guide visitors who came to the Home to the headquarters that were located in "Soweto".
When emergency arose, like an accident, I would be assigned to help one of the mothers to take the child to hospital. On a daily basis we used to unload foodstuff from the van. I also used to play with small babies during free times. I had a lot of fun working, and enjoyed every minute working at Imani.
Mary Immaculate Centre for Street Boys
Working at the Centre has been for me very fulfilling and educative. It has taught me a lot of things about myself and helped me build up some aspects of my character, such as patience and compassion for others. It has also given me the opportunity to understand the hardships the less fortunate members of society go through, and why we need to do much more to help those less fortunate by giving not only our resources but our time too.
The experience has exposed me to different cultures. I worked at the Centre with volunteers from Slovakia, Spain and Ireland, and to understand more about different cultures and beliefs people have and the general desire we all have to make our world a better place. This was mainly possible through the one-week camping expedition we had with the boys, staff and all volunteers to Nakuru.
Raila Education Centre, Kibera
The experience I gained at Raila Educational Centre is that some Kenyans live in absolute poverty, in very poor conditions. It became clear to me when I took a walk through the slums one Tuesday afternoon. The aim of this walk was to see where some of the students came from. The houses or structures have no specific plan. This includes lack of proper sanitation facilities, such as good drainage systems, no latrines, no bathrooms. On enquiring from one of the students, people buy water and those who have to bathe do it at night in the open.
When I was getting out of the slums that evening, I thanked God for the short life I have lived in a clean environment. I also said a prayer that God would have mercy on the slum dwellers. To sum it all, I can say that serving the children, the needy and less fortunate in society has been one of the best and most fulfilling things I have ever done. Just as Luther Vandros says: he would like to dance with his father again. I say, I would like to work with the children again, hoping that will be in the near future.
