James Makau, an alumnus of Strathmore University, is the Group Accounts Director of Ogilvy Public Relations. This is a 360° advertising and public relations company, whose core function is to offer its clients creative solutions for advertising, media buying and public relations.
His position in the company is to ensure that he comes up with strategies to bring his clients’ brands to ‘life’. Additionally he is responsible for ensuring that the clients get a lot of media mentions and publicity as well as offer advice on how to manage crisis communication should any crisis occur in any of clients companies.
After graduating in 2006 with a Bachelor of Commerce, Finance option, James got an opportunity to work as a financial journalist in Nation Media. He believes that Strathmore prepared him to become a knowledge worker and to explore his career beyond finance, as he managed to scale up in his career ladders, to become CFC Stanbic Bank Communications Manager and eventually to his current role as Group Accounts director for Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide.
James’ advice to the young graduates and students is to always be open-minded. He emphasizes on the importance of being a wholesome person, in ensuring that one maintains a balance between academic and social life. Mr Makau believes that his participation in sports and clubs while at Strathmore prepared him career wise, through the social skills he acquired.
He majored in Finance and engaged in different facets of finance such as financial journalism and before he eventually ventured into public relations. His parting shot to the student is; ‘The world is at the palm of your hands, you decide what to do with it’.
