Guinness announces that it would fund ten business scholarships degrees at Strathmore University. This is the third year that Guinness has provided ten business scholarships for Commerce and IT degrees at the University.
Since 2001, Guinness has donated Ksh 25 million shillings to the Guinness Strathmore Scholarship programme and funded 30 scholarship places.
The company will provide the ten students for 2003 with full tuition for the four year degree courses at a total cost of 8.3 million shillings or approximately Kshs 830,000 per student.
The ten new scholarships will be open to students throughout Kenya who have completed their KCSE with distinction and who have very limited financial resources. The students selected for this year’s Guinness Scholarship programme will begin their studies at Strathmore University in July this year.
Applications for the Guinness Scholarships will appear in all national newspapers on Friday the 30th May and Wednesday the 4th June, 2003. The closing date for the scholarship applications is the 20th of June 2003.
Sheila Amdany the External Affairs Director for Kenya Breweries said Guinness was looking for students who showed a potential for greatness but did not have the financial resources to study for a tertiary degree.
"Guinness believes in empowering people and we would like to give bright but very needy students the opportunity to study in courses that are paving the way for business in the 21st century".
Guinness believes in investing in the future of Africa by supporting educational projects throughout the continent. Ms Amdany went on to say that Guinness recognizes the need for skilled and dedicated business professionals to play an active role in the economic development of the nation.
Through the Guinness Strathmore Scholarships, Guinness hopes to encourage and promote not just the students involved, but also the future growth of Kenya.
Professor Onyango, the Dean of the Business Faculty, said that Guinness had shown their commitment to the Kenyan community now and in the future, "We applaud Guinness for their effort in helping Kenya to build a brighter and smarter future, together we must do all we can to ensure that all gifted students are given the chance to pursue a university education".
