  European Union (EU) Scholarship Fund

Under the 7th European Development Fund (EDF), the Government of Kenya and the Commission of the European Community agreed to finance and implement a Technical Education Support Programme (TESP). The TESP is specifically designed to establish a sustainable, quality-driven and demand-oriented human resource development base, which can adequately match Kenya’s development requirements.  The programme includes, as one of its components, a time-bound support to selected training institutions with the aim of consolidating previous EDF investments and improving training quality.  The programme has been designed as a short-term package aimed at consolidating previous initiatives and providing a longer-term basis for effective sectoral development.

One of the components of TESP is the Strathmore University Endowment Fund (SUEF) with a funding of €500,000; the interest earned from the Fund is used to assist bright students to pursue a training course of their choice.

A Memorandum of Understanding dealing with the rules governing the disbursement of the funds accruing from the interest earned by the Strathmore University Endowment Fund (SUEF) is in place.

Credit Agricole Indosuez, which manages the SUEF, adheres to strict rules and regulations in the management of the fund.

Perhaps the most significant thing about the SUEF bursary scheme is the key support it provides to students who have the ability to progress academically but who would not otherwise be able to pay the fees for the course.

A Bursary Committee was set up in December 1999 comprising the Registrar of Finance as the Chairman, the Directors of each School, the Registrar of Admissions and a Secretary.

Who Qualifies

To qualify for a bursary candidates must have studied in one of the top 100 schools in the KCSE examinations. The candidate must satisfy minimum qualifications (academic, financial, etc), and must pass the Strathmore Entrance Examination.   They should be under 20 years of age, single and should be Form IV level students at the time of application.  The bursary scheme does not discriminate against candidates on ethnic or religious grounds. Those candidates who qualify will study in Strathmore University for two years.

What do Students Study?

Potential students can choose from Accountancy, Information Technology, or any other new course that might be introduced at the University.

The Fund does not support undergraduate degree students.
