From November 2007 to March 2008, first year students pursuing Bachelor of Commerce have been doing Ethics 1 in which they discuss the human person, the dignity and uniqueness of each human being, human intellect and will, emotions, etc. The recent crisis in the country has been used to illustrate many of the points discussed in class. This has helped them fulfill the course objectives.
One of the issues that rose in the context of the dignity of the human person is the idea that all human beings are equal because they have the same nature; however, they are also different and need to discover that these differences can be mutually enriching when harmonized. The University motto "ut unum sint" is about unity in diversity.
To give the students the chance to experience this in real life, they were given the following exercise as their third, take-home CAT: Choose a person or a group of people from outside Strathmore University who come from a different background to yours. Do something for them or with them to foster unity in diversity and to help develop an awareness that our diversity is mutually enriching. Write about what you did, explaining this experience and what you have learned from it.
Students handed 245 write-ups recounting very interesting experiences. Some of these write ups have been chosen for presentation to the University community and the world. The idea is to disseminate the activities carried out by the students and to give everybody ideas about what we can each do for our country at this difficult time.
