Diploma in Educational Management (DEM)

The Diploma is well focused on the development of the person, leading to the skills needed for running schools and turning them into attractive learning environments.

Programme Objectives
  • To give those already experienced in the field grounding in educational leadership and management skills and to empower them to meet the challenges of change in education.
  • To prepare participants for positions of educational leadership and management.
  • To give the Kenyan teacher the requisite human training to make them effective contributors to the moral fibre of the nation.
Programme Structure and Duration

The DEM curriculum is based on continuous assessment, examinations, work-based assignments and a research project. The programme shall run for one academic year divided into three semesters, with one module being administered in each semester.  The lecture sessions, continuous assessment tests and examinations will be conducted at the University. Work-based assignments and the project will be undertaken by the students in their institutions.
The curriculum consists of four (4) course modules, with a total of 17 units. At the end of course work candidates will undertake a project equivalent to two (2) course units.

Entry Requirements

The following are eligible for admission into the Post Experience Diploma in Educational Management (DEM).

  1. Holders of a Professional Teaching Certificate with a minimum of 3 years working experience in a school environment.
  2. In addition to meeting the above admission criteria, applicants:
    1. Will normally be presently working in a school.
    2. Will also be required to attend and pass an oral interview and an appropriate entrance examination.
    3. Will be required to present two reference letters from academic referees.

  • Head teachers and classroom teachers in primary schools who wish to develop leadership skills to improve their performance as educational managers and leaders in primary schools
  • Teachers in primary schools who aspire to assume positions of education leadership and management in primary schools

Semester Dates and Timing
Lecture Hours: Monday to Friday:  8.00 am to 4.30 pm
Semesters

Semester 1:  27 November to 22 December 2006

Semester 2:  April 2007 (4 weeks)

Semester 3:  August 2007 (3 weeks)

Entrance Examination and Interviews

All candidates seeking admission are required to sit an Entrance Examination. This Examination tests the candidate’s extent of professional teaching experience. It is followed by a personal interview. 
Interviews are being conducted at the University on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8.00 am, and on Saturday 30th September 06. Interviews will continue until the class capacity is attained.

Candidates should bring with them:

  1. three passport-size photographs,
  2. originals and photocopies of all relevant academic and professional certificates and
  3. KShs. 500/- entrance exam fee.

Semester 1           Kshs 36,500
Semester 2           Kshs 30,000
Semester 3           Kshs 36,000
        Total          Kshs 102,500

This amount covers tuition, supervision, examinations, the ID card, caution money (refundable), computer usage and internet access and library usage.
A refundable Library fee of Kshs 5,000 will allow you to borrow books out of the library for specified periods.
