  Diploma in Business Information Technology
Why study Dip.BIT?
  • Curriculum developed to meet the immediate needs of the Kenyan market, relevant to the growing need for IT professionals at the middle levels of organisations.
  • Provides good intermediate-level training for those who want to enter the job market at the middle levels.
  • Relevant and well focused towards the Bachelor of Business Information Technology at Strathmore University and equivalent degree programmes in other Universities.
  • Good backup for candidates pursuing non-IT courses who wish to change professions in future.
  • It is an added advantage to non-IT professionals who wish to acquire IT skills for their professional work.
Goals of the Programme
  • To develop a coherent and broad-based coverage of business information systems and the underlying technology to implement these systems.
  • To enhance confidence and the ability to evaluate business information requirements and develop solutions from model professional and technical perspectives.
  • To prepare candidates to apply the principles learnt in the performance of their duties in the workplace.
  • To prepare candidates for progression to higher levels of education, notably to degree level.
Who can join Dip.BIT?
  • Secondary school leavers with the required qualifications who are interested in developing a career in IT.
  • Trained professionals in other disciplines who have an interest in developing a career in IT.
  • Individuals in the IT industry with basic qualifications (e.g. certificate holders) who wish to progress to Diploma and eventually to degree level.
  • Individuals in other professions who wish to acquire IT skills to supplement their core specialisation.

Entry Requirements
  • KCSE Aggregate C+ with a minimum of C in both Mathematics and English.
  • KACE certificate with a minimum of two Principal Passes and one Subsidiary, and a minimum of a Credit Pass in Mathematics at KCE.
  • KCSE aggregate C with a Professional Certificate in Information Technology or a relevant discipline from an institution recognised by the Academic Council.

* Exemptions and Credit Transfers are granted at the discretion of the Academic Council.

* Candidates awaiting KCSE results can apply using KCSE-Mock results.

Entrance Examinations

Candidates shall be required to sit an Entrance Test, which consists of:

  • Mathematics and English Tests
  • Oral interview

Candidates should report to the University by 8.00 a.m. on Tuesdays and should bring:

  • 3 passport-size photographs
  • Original and photocopies of relevant academic and professional certificates
  • Entrance Examination fee.

Semester dates
  • The DBIT Programme takes 4 semesters (fulltime) and 5 semesters (evening) .
  • There are 3 semesters in a year with two intakes per year: January and May;

Semester Dates are:

  • Semester 1 January - April
  • Semester 2 May - August
  • Semester 3 September - December
Programme Duration and Structure
  1. The programme is offered in terms of modules over a period of 4 semesters; three semesters in a year. Each module is 60 contact hours. Note: Evening classes run for fie semesters
  2. The course is divided into two Parts: Part I and Part II. Each Part comprises ten (10) modules. More...
Examinations
  1. All modules are examined in the semester in which they are taken.
  2. Examinations consist of Continuous Assessments and University Examinations.
  3. Continuous assessments will normally comprise practicals, tests and assignments. Continuous assessments account for 40% of the total marks and written University Examinations 60% of the total marks . Modules that consist entirely of practical work may be assessed out of 100% by means of continuous assessment.

Each module is graded out of 100 marks and the pass mark is 50%. Marks are translated into letter grades as follows:

Award of Diploma

DBIT is granted to successful candidates, subject to the following:

  • Except where exempted, a candidate must have taken and passed the twenty (20) required modules to be considered for the award of the Diploma.
  • The Diploma to be awarded is the Diploma in Business Information Technology (DBIT).
  • Final classification of the Diploma is based on the Overall Average Mark of the required modules. It is to be classified as follows, based on the Overall Average Mark:
