Academics & Research Mobile Boot Camp 2009

 

Overview

A mobile boot camp is a crash-course session, usually spanning 2-3 days, whereby participants will be exposed to the following concepts:

  • GSM Networks
  • Telecom billing systems
  • Call Centre technologies
  • Data Warehousing telecom data
  • Mobile computing: Application development

The sessions comprise both theoretical and practical whereby participants gain an insight on mobile computing technologies as well as acquire practical skills in the use of current platforms, frameworks and tools used for the development of mobile applications.

The University's inaugural Mobile Boot Camp was held was held on 28th and 29th of November, 2008. More than 100 information technology developers (programmers) and students attended the event. Strathmore Research and Consultancy Centre (SRCC) hosted the event in collaboration with the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT).

Dates

This year the university will hold the mobile boot camp on the 9th to 11th July, 2009.

Theme

The camp will be held under the theme; "Mobile Applications for Development in Africa". The event will be capped off with a mobile development competition, inviting mobile applications in the fields of M-Learning, M-Health and M-Agriculture.

Objectives
The mobile boot camp aims to:

  • Help participants gain theoretical knowledge on mobile application development technologies.
  • Give participants an opportunity for hands on development of mobile applications for specific industries.
  • Create academic research opportunities within the academic community.
  • Develop a widely applicable mobile phone programming curriculum.
Target Group

The target for this year’s camp is university students from public and private institutions in Kenya as well as local developers and entrepreneurs.

Limited Entry: First Come First Served

Charges

Students (Strathmore and non-Strathmore): 700Ksh
Non-Students: 1500Ksh

Programming Competition

At the end of the mobile boot camp, we will launch a programming competition inviting participants to develop applications in the areas of M-Learning, M-Health and M-Agriculture. The competition will run for a month. Prizes will be awarded to the top three projects.
