 Dr Reuben Marwanga, Bob Collymore and Dr Bhattacharya The Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) in conjunction with Alumni Relations office organised an Alumni Reunion cocktail for postgraduates, which was held on the evening of Friday 22nd February at SU auditorium. The function was attended by alumni, current students, staff and guests. Also in attendance as guest speakers were; Dr Kamal Bhattacharya, Director for Research IBM-Africa and Bob Collymore, CEO Safaricom Limited. The theme of the event was "Strategic Innovation in ICT" of which the two guest speakers gave 20 minutes lectures each while emphasising the use of innovation in the application of ICT. The event featured presentations among other activities including interactions and networking amongst alumni, students and guests. Welcome remarks were made by Dr Reuben Marwanga, Dean Faculty of IT who explained that the key objective of the reunion was to initiate an alumni association and create networking opportunities for continuing education for the Faculty's alumni and students. This was further expounded by the Interim Chairperson-Organising Committee, Ms Janet Mackenzie. She urged fellow alumni to join the association as it would assist in contributions in support of critical areas such as financial aid, admissions, career development, research, discounted alumni services, access to library services, networking, continuing education opportunities, interactions with other alumni associations, policy development and lifetime membership. Ms Mackenzie challenged the alumni to think of ways on how to stay connected and informed the alumni that they would provide opportunities for them to: - To mentor a current students and young alumni
- To flex one's leadership skills by joining the alumni committee
- To contribute to the new dimension the alumni would like to implement e.g alumni scholarship program
- To network in partnership with the alumni relations office
- To participate and contribute on e-newsletters designed to keep the alumni up to date on announcements and events in the various schools and departments of the University
- To create and participate in Alumni activities
- To create data bank of all alumni in conjunction with relations office
- To participate in Alumni Associations grouping together either by School, Interest, towns or Country
- To connect through social media like Face book, Twitter, Flickr, LinkedIn
Dr Bhattacharya, in his speech, laid emphasis on data science, a new concept that he said that he was focusing on adopting the technology in Kenya.Mr. Bob Collymore highlighted and emphasised a lot on the need for improvements on how the alumni as Kenyans can have access to better education and health through use of ICT. He challenged the alumni to think of how to stay competitive in terms of education in the global economy.
