| A Time to Celebrate |
|
Fifty years of existence for any institution is no mean feat; especially one which had a humble beginning and has stood the test of time. It calls for celebrations! Strathmore opened its doors on 6th March 1961 under the encouragement and inspiration of St. Josémaria, founder of Opus Dei. This year therefore marks the 50th anniversary of Strathmore; a fabulous half-century, that stands tall in Kenyan history.
The 50th Anniversary presents us an opportunity to reflect on five decades of history, boost institutional pride, publicize the accomplishments of the institution and recommit to its mission and vision for the future.
Strathmore College was established in Lavington, Nairobi as an A-Level Sixth Form College offering Science and Arts subjects. It was established by a group of professionals, as a college which would admit students from all races despite the racial segregation that prevailed in Kenya during the pre-independence period. These young professionals would not have predicted, under the prevalent difficult conditions, the course that Strathmore would take.
Fifty years later, Strathmore College has grown to Strathmore University and Strathmore School both of which stand as nationally recognized institution of learning known for their high standards of delivery and quality of service. So, we are 50 years old and we intend to celebrate. We have already had a few celebratory events and are planning a series of other events for the months ahead – some small; others on a much bigger scale. In all, we hope to reach a lot of people to whom we owe thanks. Not only our working colleagues within Strathmore, but also the legions of students, alumni, friends and supporters who have helped us grow.
The apex event will be the Golden Jubilee Celebrations at Strathmore University Campus, Madaraka Estate on 9th July 2011 which will include the inauguration of our Phase III Buildings.
